Downsizing in style: Why empty-nesters are choosing inner-city living

Downsizing usually involves a farewell to high-maintenance homes and excess possessions, but it needn’t mean sacrificing lifestyle, convenience or luxury. Quite the opposite.

Successive property booms have handed many Australian downsizers financial windfalls when they finally sell.

Agents are reporting a surge in cashed-up Baby Boomers snapping up luxurious inner-city apartments near shops, restaurants, cultural attractions and transport – a change from previous generations’ well-worn paths to sleepy coastal hamlets or north to Queensland.

Rob Mancini is project sales and marketing manager at MMJ Real Estate, which is marketing a glamorous new high-rise apartment development in the Wollongong CBD called Signature.

Mancini says empty-nesters have been drawn to the high-end architecture, convenience, security and resort-style amenities in the building, 90 minutes’ drive south of central Sydney.
